- Teaching at the Department of African Languages and Cultures
The Department offers a five-year programme (10 semesters) and graduates are awarded a Master of Arts degree. On completing the course students should have mastered a wide range of information on Africa, including geography, history, language situation, current political, social and cultural developments. They should also acquire specialization in one of the regions of Africa (e.g. East Africa, West Africa). Hence the requirement of a fluent command of one regional Africa language and some profiviency in another one that would be culturally significant for the area. In addition the graduates must know two West European languages and African literature of the region. They should also be familiar with the pattern of various languages spoken in the area and its correspondence to the social and political framework. Besides, graduates have possibilities to specialize in one of the following disciplines: linguistics, literature, history, and sociology.
The compulsory Ethiopian courses include: Amharic, general course on Ethiopia, introduction to Ethiopian Studies, history of Ethiopia, proseminars and seminars. An optional programme encompasses Giiz, Arabica and/or another Semitic language and a set number of courses euther in African or Ethiopian Studies and in the humanities in general.
The Section of African Studies provides for two specializations with separate admissions: Hausa Studies and Swahili Studies. Hausa and Swahili are the main languages taught in the respective specializations. Other compulsory African courses include: a general course on Africa, an introduction to African Studies, the history and culture of the continent. Optional courses include a set number of courses in African Studies and in the humanities in general.
